Top Ten Popular Authors I’ve Never Read

4th March 2014 By Julianne 1 Comment

Top Ten Tuesday was created and is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Popular Authors I’ve Never Read

1. Charlotte Brontë – Oh look, there go all the Jane Eyre references, whooshing right over my head!
2. Veronica Roth – and all the Divergent references…
3. John Green – I’ve watched some of his videos, and I have Paper Towns on my TBR!
4. Stephen King – just doesn’t really appeal!
5.Cassandra Clare – to be honest, I’m not sure these appeal to me either, comparatively few bloggers seem to rave about her books.
6. Tamora Pierce – my best friend at school used to read loads of hers, but I’ve never gotten around to it!
7. Georgette Heyer – never gotten around to it!
8. Patrick Ness – I really want to read his books, but alas, time has not been on my side.
9. Douglas Adams – I keep meaning to get hold of a copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and yet…
10. F. Scott Fitzgerald – I love the 1920s, so this is just plain silly!

I could have made this list about five times longer, but I tried to pick a variety of authors – including a couple whose books I don’t really want to read. How long could your list have been?

Top Ten Books To Read In A Day

25th February 2014 By Julianne 4 Comments

We often rant about how long some books are and how difficult it is to find time to read them, but it’s much more unusual to rave about shorter reads, so I chose this topic for today’s Top Ten Tuesday Rewind.

Top Ten Tuesday was created and is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten Books To Read In A Day
1. Cold Water, by Gwendoline Riley – atmospheric and beautiful.
2. All My Friends Are Superheroes, by Andrew Kaufman – imaginative, funny, and romantic.

3. Bonjour Tristesse, by Françoise Sagan – absorbing and tragic.

4. The Plain Janes, by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg – a graphic novel in which four very different teenaged Janes get together and make public artworks. There’s also a sequel, Janes in Love.

5. Breakers, by Julia Clarke – emotionally involving, great characterisation.

6. Life on the Refrigerator Door, by Alice Kuipers – a story told via notes from a mother and daughter to each other. A tearjerker.

7. Milk, Sulphate and Alby Starvation, by Martin Millar– surreal, silly, super.

8. The Butterfly Tattoo, by Philip Pullman – a short thriller with a poignant ending.

9. grl2grl, by Julie Anne Peters – a diverse and really enjoyable selection of stories about LGBT characters.

10. Festival, by David Belbin – four characters’ lives become entwined at Glastonbury festival.

What shorter reads would you recommend?
